Vol. 8, No. 3 |
November 1999 |
Innvestments started the month with a very busy schedule. Normally no regular meeting is planned due to having Fantasia Fair and the Halloween Party both within the month. This year the meeting, FANFAIR and the party all took place and each was a very successful event.
The meeting took place on Monday evening the 4th. The program did not completely pan out as scheduled so Plan B was put into effect. As folks gathered and changed, everyone was routed to the lounge where sandwiches, soup, burgers, etc. were ordered up for everyone. We had a good group with several of our members in attendance who had only been to some major functions and never attended a regular meeting. We enjoyed having you and hope you will return more frequently. The group made quite a hit in the lounge as that night the hotel had 3 tour bus loads of visitors, also in attendance.
The lounge plan worked very well. The food was good, the service was great and the socializing between the membership was excellent. In fact several gals thought that we should do this or something similar one more time during the year.
The 25th Silver Anniversary of Fantasia Fair took place between the 17th and 24th of October, once again in Provincetown. By last count, Innvestments had 13 folks participating in or with the Fair in various activities. Several of our members were in key positions and kept the Fair on track.
There were some problems with Provincetown Reservations This finally was ironed out. This is something that will be fixed for future events.
The Fair was a successful event. The piano concert was absolutely beautiful. The Follies Talent Show was a super success with over 300 in attendance. Using the town hall allowed more folks and better viewing.
The continuation at Vixen's afterward was also a success. The grand finale this year was held at the Sheraton in Eastham. Super event with 170 in attendance. We missed YOU!

It was a beautiful day and the evening was pure Halloween. Goblins and ghosts, monsters and vampires lurked behind every tree just waiting for the next victim to appear. One by one and two by two they started to arrive at the 3rd house on the left of Hobgoblin Lane. The house had only a few lights and emitted that air of......."I dare you to enter...".
You could just feel the anticipation hanging in the evening light. Knock, knock....The doors were thrown open and the intimidation disappeared. It was immediately replaced with joviality, frivolity and a swinging party atmosphere........Come on in.....join the fun!
Once again, thanks to two super folks Pat and Joan, the Halloween Party was the high point of the season. Their beautiful home was appropriately decorated and even the resident ghost...(much to everyone's dismay) was watching quietly and behaving himself. The food was ample and delicious, the hosts were terrific and the party was marvelous. Attendance was about twenty-five and included a great many spouses and significant others. Those who were unable to attend were missed.
Of course, the costumes were just fabulous. Could not remember everyone who was there and what they wore but just a smattering included: Markie and Ken as a Playboy bunny and Groucho Marx; Rachel and Sandy as Little Red Riding Hood and Cleopatra; Brenda and Janet as twin Fairy God Mothers; Carmen as a witch; Cindy and Sharon as a nurse and patient; Amanda as nurse; Jennifer and Joanne as a Lady and her man (reverse rolls); Wendy was in an evening gown; Deandra......well "sexy"; Noelle as a ballet dancer; Denise as a Princess; and Joan and Pat as hostesses. Prizes for the evening included the following:
Shortest skirt:.............Noelle
Rose with
her ballerina tutu that came up to (ahem).
Highest Heels............Deandra, who wore white leather boots
that went up to her thighs and had heels at least 4 inches
tall.
Most/Biggest Hair.......Janet, that natural red head with
hair to her waist.
Best Overall Costume...Sandy, who came as Cleopatra in
a wonderful self made outfit that would have put the real Cleopatra
to shame.
Everyone had a great time. A few even more than others. That front room dance that Noelle Rose did was a classic. We are going to see if she can repeat that again for those who were unable to see it. And Stephanie got stopped by the police on the way home. She had not been drinking as she knew that she had a long ride ahead of her so all was well. She overly polited the officer....he made some comment about her wedding band that she still does not understand but then sent her on her way with a smile.
We owe our thanks to Joan and Pat for their great generosity and super hospitality.

There seems
to be quite a bit of interest in the techniques of Electrology
2000, so I wanted to share my experience Initially, I went a couple
of times to an electrologist in New England who is active in the
transgendered community, and very competent and knowledgeable
in her profession. Although the procedure was performed with tender
loving care, it hurt like crazy. Maybe I'm just a sissy, but I
really couldn't see going through this experience every week for
the next two or three years (although I do understand one gets
use to the discomfort over time). As a result I went looking for
an alternative.
I first learned about Electrology
2000 at the 1996 Texas-T-Party in Dallas, where they presented
a seminar. Since I am regularly in Texas I thought I would give
it a try. It is not unusual to have to book an appointment at
Electrology 2000 months in advance, and pay a sizable deposit.
The deposit will be returned or reapplied if your cancellation
is received with sufficient warning and the time slot can be filled.
Fortunately I was conveniently available when such a cancellation
appeared, so I flew from Houston to Dallas for my one day appointment.
There were no rental cars that morning at Love Field (something
about a dress manufacturers' convention) so I had to take a $20
cab for the 1/2 hour ride into the Dallas suburbs.
The office, with its many private
treatment rooms, is much like a doctor's, which is no accident
since the owner Jo Bren is an accredited dentist. She is also
a member of the transgender community, as are most of her patients.
Jo Bren has four charming electrologists who have received at
least 9 months of training at Electrology 2000. Since they had
only eight hours available to work on me, it was decided to concentrate
on just my neck. This seemed especially prudent since I wanted
to attend an elegant ball a couple of days later. Typically there
is redness, swelling and numbness after the treatment. The amount
depends on the individual and the portion of the face covered.
The most sensitive areas are the upper lip and chin. It may take
a week or two for the most obvious effects to subside, and a month
or more for them to disappear altogether.
The appointment starts with an explanation of the technique. As
their literature explains, Electrology 2000 uses an insulated
and flexible probe, which in the hands of their skilled electrologists,
kills the hair cell but does not damage the adjoining tissue.
The hair cell is zapped at least twice with a pulse of heat, the
hair is then removed with tweezers, and then the hair cell is
zapped once again. You can sometimes hear a "pop" as
the heat interacts with the fluid in the hair follicle. Electrology
2000 claims it gets a complete kill of the hair cells as compared
to a much lower rate by conventional means. The insulated probe
combined with not having to retreat a hair reduces the treatment
time, and lessens the chance of scaring. What I especially liked
was the fact that the treatment area is first anesthetized with
Novocain (thus Jo Bren's qualifications as a dentist). As long
as the electrologist stays within the numbed area there is no
pain, except for a pinprick sensation when the Novocain needle
pierces the skin.
The electrologists rotate between
patients as needed, and at times two woman may work on you concurrently.
I was amazed at how they maintained their concentration for hours
on end. Jo Bren pops in periodically to talk and administer additional
Novocain. The process passes rapidly as you chat, read a book,
watch a video, or even go to sleep, although after a couple of
days the procedure could get tedious.. At some point everyone
gets together in the lunch room for a break, and to swap experiences.
I met an artist from California, who interestingly, is removing
his beard because of problems with ingrown hairs.
It is difficult to say at the outset
how many hours will be required to completely remove a beard,
but Jo Bren estimates 70 to 90 hours for the average beard, and
100 hours or more for a heavy one. Many patients elect to have
their face completely cleared at one time. A process, which for
the first session, may require 3-4 days, and possibly up to 50
hours. Since not all the facial hairs are evident above the skin
at any one time, it may take 4 to 6 sessions, spaced at least
six weeks apart, to complete the process. Of course each session
takes less time than the previous one. For example, one patient
at Electrology 2000 required 101 hours spaced over six sessions
in one year. The clearing times from the 1st to 6th session were
53, 22, 9, 8, 7, and 2 hours.
The cost of the treatment is currently
$88.00 per hour each electrologist is actually working. Of course
the fee is pro-rated for any portion less than an hour. Although
this rate is higher than what most electrologists charge, if computed
on the basis of a 100% kill rate, than the price per hair is comparable.
Of course you also have to add the expenses of airfare, hotel,
meals and transportation. Obviously this process is not for everyone.
It requires the commitment of a large quantity of cash and time
at each appointment, as well as the ability to travel. Jo Bren
has considered establishing an office in another part of the country,
but for now her hands are full with just the Dallas location.
Don't expect to waltz into the office any time soon either. Electrology
2000 is typically booked up to six months in advance.
